Thank you for visiting our website. Please consider visiting our rooms as well.
NFHS has much to offer visitors. Our wide range of resources will help family historians who have traced their ancestors to or from the Newcastle and the Hunter Valley areas and will also assist those who are now Newcastle residents but whose ancestors came from further afield.
Our extensive printed library contains thousands of book and journal resources from across Australia and also from overseas.
The library also has numerous resources on CD, USB, microfilm and microfiche covering areas from across Australia and overseas.
There is free wifi throughout our building giving access to the many free sites available to genealogists on Society computers or on your personal device.
Our Society subscribes to Find My Past.
Our members are our greatest resource and their varied experise may be the key to solving your difficult research problem. If one of our members can't think of a way to solve your problem - another might.
We publish an award-winning comprehensive Journal four times a year full of histories, advice, tips and tricks. Copies of our Journal are free to members but copies are available from the front desk at a cost of $3.
Our rooms are historic and visitors are welcome to come in and view the old photographs and artifacts on display, have a tour of the building or be shown our extensive resources. If visitors wish to stay to research, there is a fee to use the library (see below).
Everyone is welcome to come and hear our guest speakers at meetings on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30 pm (or 2.00 pm during winter).
Each year we usually hold several special display or open days. Visitors are free to do research at no charge on those days, although donations are always appreciated.
Non-members wanting to use our extensive library facilities pay $5 to visit on Thursdays, or $10 on Saturdays. This fee is offered as a credit towards a new membership if the visitor joins within 14 days.
Printing and photocopying facilities are available at a charge of 30c per page. Personal storage devices may be used provided volunteer librarians are aware that you have brought your own device. Please remember that Copyright must always be observed.
Disabled access to the building is available through the gate beside Meals on Wheels in De Vitre Street.
Please phone 49578296 during Library hours to arrange access.
The Society has a new disabled toilet.
Our other amenities include tea and coffee making facilities, a small fridge and a microwave. The Society is opposite Lambton Park which has a large children's playground and picnic area. We are an easy flat walk to the Elder Street shopping strip that has a selection of pubs, coffee shops and eateries. See our contact page for maps and further information.
A research service is available.
The use of the library is free to Society members and brings with it other priviledges such as library borrowing, so consider joining NFHS - especially if you live locally.
